Title: Ephemeral Rainbow Yellowknife, NT, Canada: January 2002
With the Aurora Oval usually between 60 and 70 degrees north, Yellowknife is very well located to catch northern lights displays. In the six weeks that I spent in Yellowknife, there seemed to be a 90% chance that I would eventually see some kind of display if it was clear, and that was usually worth my efforts.
I can remember only two nights where it was clear and I did not see any aurora at all. I knew it was going to be a great night for aurora-watching when this colorful curtain became obvious even before the evening twilight faded to darkness.
Weather Conditions: Clear, dry, 25 degrees below zero F and dropping fast.
