Viridian Swirl aurora solar storm by Bryan R. White

Title: Viridian Swirl Yellowknife, NT, Canada: January 2002

This image was taken at approximately 1:00 a.m. during a very intense Aurora Storm. It is common during such storms for gigantic swirls of light to form in the atmosphere. They mimic either astronomical galaxies or terrestrial tornadoes. This one was wrapped around a single red ray. I believe the bright star in the middle is Deneb.
Weather Conditions: Very Clear, dry, -35 degrees F.
